In this visual presentation, local bird artist and children’s illustrator, Kate Garchinsky, will lead us through the creation of her narrative non-fiction books for children. She’ll share her step-by-step process, from field research, to specimen studies, to dummy sketches, to color art. We’ll get some sneak previews of Kate’s future nature titles, including an osprey book with DVOC member Dr. Rob Bierregaard, her next “Secret Life” bat book with Laurence Pringle, and some very recent work on the Carolina parakeet.
NOTE
This presentation is for both adult and youth audiences. The presentation is not in the main museum—it takes place on the first floor, 19th street entrance. Check in at the desk and let them know you are here for the DVOC meeting. Running time is 35 minutes (starting around 8 PM) plus 10 minutes for Q&A, artwork viewing, and book orders and signing. More information can be found on the Kate’s Red Fox Event Page on Facebook.
BIO
Kate Garchinsky illustrates and writes children’s books and educational media in her studio in Edgmont, PA. Kate received an Eckelberry Fellowship at the Academy of Natural Sciences in 2015, where she has spent time researching and sketching from specimens of extinct North American birds. Her studies of the passenger pigeon accompanied an article by Joel Greenberg in Birding Magazine in 2014, marking the centenary of Martha’s death in the Cincinnati Zoo. Next month Audubon Magazine will feature her illustrations of the Carolina parakeet as we approach the centenary of its extinction. Kate Garchinsky will be publishing illustrated life histories of both species in 2018.
Kate has illustrated three non-fiction kids’ books: “The Secret Life of the Red Fox” (2017) and “The Secret Life of the Little Brown Bat” (2018), written by Laurence Pringle, and “Belle’s Journey: An Osprey Takes Flight” authored by Dr. Rob Bierregaard (2018).
